Drugs Worth £1.9m Found Floating Off US Coast

The drug haul of 160 bales, estimated to be worth more than $3m (about £1.9m), was spotted off Dana Point, 60 miles south of Los Angeles, said local sheriff spokesman Joe Balicki.

It is thought a drug smuggling accident could be to blame but the amount involved would have required a larger vessel than a small craft typically used to smuggle drugs around the nearby Mexican-US border.

"It kind of makes you wonder how it got there," Mr Balicki said, adding: "We didn't have any reports of vessels in distress."

The bales, wrapped in plastic, were found bobbing in the sea about 15 miles from shore on Sunday.

The drugs were picked up by US Border Patrol agents assisted by the US Coastguard and Orange County sheriff's department harbour patrol deputies, he added.

Border Patrol official Michael Jimenez told the Orange County Register that large drug shipments are sometimes dropped overboard when smugglers have to flee from authorities.

"At other events, they've dumped the bales to get rid of weight if they're being chased," he explained.

"Generally in these cases we're aware they're being dumped. What's more unusual is that the bales were floating with no boat in sight."

On CCTV footage, the youngster's feet can be seen spinning around in the dryer for more than a minute, as the pair desperately try to free the child.

Staff from the launderette in the US eventually manage to stop the machine and release the toddler.

Video of the prank backfiring was posted on YouTube by a user identified as PrincessZebra, who reported that the child suffered minor injuries but was safe and well.

The African National Congress (ANC), which has governed the country since 1994, wants the Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg to take down two of the paintings.

One, called The Spear, is a facsimile of a famous poster of Vladimir Lenin with Mr Zuma mimicking the Communist leader's heroic stance, however the South African President is depicted with his genitals out.

The other shows the ANC logo with a "For Sale" sign superimposed across it.

The works are part of a collection called "Hail to the Thief", which comes as a growing public perception that official corruption is on the rise in South Africa.

Other works include a Soviet-style poster reading: "The Kleptocrats" and "We demand Chivas, BMW's and Bribes".

"It's making a mockery of the highest office," ANC spokesman Jackson Mthembu said.

He added that the artist was within his rights to express himself but said The Spear was "vulgar".

Mr Zuma, who has been married six times and fathered 21 children, faces a battle for re-election as the party leader at the end of this year.

The Spear, by well-known anti-apartheid artist Brett Murray, has already been sold for £10,300 to a German citizen.
